Craters of the Moon
National Monument & Preserve ∙ Idaho
Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve
protects almost the entire 50-mile Great Rift in the Snake
River Plain. Beginning 15,000 years ago, a great tear in the
earth opened and magma poured through to the surface.
These repeated eruptions occurred on average every 2,000
years. The lava fields of Craters of the Moon contain more
than 25 volcanic cones, including outstanding examples of
 Spatter Cones.
